 UKICRS Summer Placement 2017

Submission deadline extended to Tuesday 14th February!

After two successful years, UKICRS are once again offering funding to support an undergraduate student in an 8-week summer research project. The research project, which will be selected by the student and their academic supervisor, must be in the general field of pharmaceutical sciences / controlled release drug delivery. The applicant must have the support of an academic supervisor and the host academic institution.

How much is the award?
The studentship provides a stipend of £180 per week for a maximum of eight weeks. Research expenses are not covered.

Criteria for application
Applications are invited from students entering the penultimate or final year of their undergraduate education in any university within the UK and Ireland. Applications must include a named supervisor or supervisors that hold a permanent academic position within a UK or ROI university. They must be able to guarantee that the student can have space in their laboratory and fulfil any necessary legal requirements that the student’s presence requires. Postdoctoral researchers, PhD students and technicians are unable to be project supervisors; however, they can provide day-to-day supervision of the student and be named on the application form. There may be only one application per candidate or supervisor. Awards are not transferable. Applicants are required to submit an article for inclusion in the 2018 UKICRS Newsletter, summarising the research topic that they undertook and the exciting results obtained. Visit the UKICRS website for examples of previous newsletter articles (http://www.ukicrs.org/newsletter.html).

Preparing for an application
The key criteria for assessing the applications will include project feasibility, novelty, and academic performance of the applicant. The winning applicant will be featured in the UKICRS annual newsletter. Additionally, the applicants will be expected to write a short article describing their summer project for inclusion in the UKICRS newsletter. UKICRS will not assist in the organisation of project placements; students should contact prospective supervisors themselves. Students and supervisors should develop the project and application together. The application should be a project that can be realistically undertaken within a maximum of eight weeks. The student should not be viewed as an extra pair of hands in the host laboratory.

Submitting an application
Applications forms should be completed and submitted online by 14th February 2017. For further information, please contact us at UKICRS@gmail.com.
After submission of the application
Applications will be assessed by the UKICRS committee. Successful applicants will be notified by March 1st 2017. The committee decision is final. UKICRS can not offer feedback on individual applications.

For successful applications
Reimbursement of the award will be made to the institution as a single payment after the student has completed their placement. Details of this will be provided in the award letter. It is an expectation of the UKICRS that students will receive their stipend from the institution as at least two payments, one of which should be at least half way through the scholarship period. The stipend should not be paid as a lump sum at the end of the project.

Responsibilities of supervisor
  • Supervise the UKICRS student throughout the course of the project
  • Provide appropriate training necessary for the safe and successful completion of the project
  • Ensure adequate space and equipment is available
  • Give support and guidance on the dissemination of research outcomes

Responsibilities of student
  • Commit to the complete duration of the project
  • Submit a summary report of the work completed for inclusion in the 2018 UKICRS Newsletter; this should be no longer than 300 words.

Other terms and conditions
By entering the competition, entrants agree to transfer copyright of the submitted article to UKICRS, giving the Society the right to reproduce, distribute and broadcast the article in printed, electronic or any other medium. UKICRS will also have the right to edit the article as deemed appropriate for publishing, but full credit will be given to authors. The article must be the original work of the person making the submission. Submissions will be checked electronically for plagiarism.
