UKICRS Research and Development Award 2019

 A chance to upskill yourself!

Now in its second year, the UKICRS Research and Development Award offers support to a postgraduate or postdoctoral student in a research or development activity. The award will allow a student to attend a training course or workshop, or to carry out a lab visit for training purposes. The nominated activity, which will be selected by the student, must be related to the general field of pharmaceutical sciences / controlled release drug delivery. The applicant must have the support of an academic supervisor, and, where relevant, a supervisor at the host academic institution.

How much is the award?
The award provides a maximum amount of £1000 for attendance of a relevant training course, workshop, or lab visit. The award can be used to cover course costs, reasonable travel expenses and accommodation, as applicable.

Criteria for application
  • Applications are invited from postgraduate research students and postdoctoral students based at a University in the UK or Ireland.
  • The applicant must be a UKICRS member at the time of application.
  • The applicant must provide a letter of support from their own academic supervisor, as a separate PDF document.
  • Where the specified training activity is a lab visit, a short supporting statement from a named supervisor at the host institution must also be submitted – this could for example consist of a copy of an email from the host supervisor, confirming their commitment to support the application and host the applicant for the specified training activity. The supporting statement must be submitted as a separate PDF document.
  • There may be only one application per applicant or supervisor. Awards are not transferable, and the training activity covered by the award must be completed by the end of the 2019 calendar year.
  • Award recipients are required to submit an article for inclusion on the UKICRS website, reporting on the research or development opportunity that they undertook and the exciting outcomes of this activity. Visit the UKICRS website for examples of previous articles.

Preparing for an application
The key criteria for assessing applications will be the direct benefit of the specified activity to the applicant. The winning applicant will be featured on the UKICRS website. Additionally, the applicant will be expected to write a short article describing their research or development activity, to be featured on the UKICRS website. UKICRS will not assist in the organisation of research or development activities; students should contact prospective course organisers or host academic institutions themselves.

Submitting an application
Application forms should be completed and submitted online (see below) by Sunday 31st March. For further information, please contact us at UKICRS@gmail.com.
After submission of the application
Applications will be assessed by the UKICRS committee. Successful applicants will be notified by Thursday 18th April. The committee decision is final. UKICRS cannot offer feedback on individual applications.

For successful applications
Reimbursement of the award will be made to the institution as a single payment after the student has completed their research or development activity. Details of this will be provided in the award letter.

Responsibilities of applying student

UKICRS will also have the right to edit the article as deemed appropriate for publishing, but full credit will be given to authors.
