Karl is a lecturer in the School of Pharmacy at the Queen's University of Belfast. Following his first degree in Chemistry, he completed a PhD in the synthesis and characterization of chiral liquid crystalline polymers. In his current post, his main research interests lie in the application of polymeric materials to the fields of controlled drug delivery and biomaterials/medical devices. Ongoing research programs focus on the potential use of vaginal rings for the long-term, controlled delivery of both microbicidal compounds and vaccines in order to prevent the heterosexual transmission of HIV. Recently, Karl has been part of a successful $19.7 million application to the Grand Challenges in Global Health Initiative - the funding will support a multi-disciplinary international team researching novel antigen design and delivery for mucosal protection against HIV-1 infection. Outside of work, Karl is a keen musician (electric guitar, drums) and enjoys trying to grow plants from seeds.
